US Airways unions resist cuts
Bloomberg News
Sept. 24, 2004
ARLINGTON, Va. - US Airways Group Inc. unions
are balking at the carrier's request for immediate concessions
including 23 percent pay cuts, even after the company said
it would ask a bankruptcy judge to impose the changes today.
The union for customer service and reservation
agents said on its Web site that it met with US Airways on
Thursday to try to "lessen these drastic cuts."
Also, the Association of Flight Attendants called the concession
request "excessive and inequitable," and the union
for mechanics said it wanted to independently assess the need
for such "drastic" changes. The Air Line Pilots
Association would oppose having the court impose changes,
a spokesman said.
US Airways told workers Wednesday that it
would seek court permission to cut wages and benefits if tentative
agreements weren't reached by today. The Arlington-based carrier,
which filed for bankruptcy Sept. 12, said it needs to conserve
cash for the slow autumn and winter travel season.
